The Chase for Local Pride in England

There's a pretty interesting game in the Barclays Premier league tomorrow at 10:05 a.m. 2nd place vs 4th place. 2013-14 champions vs 2012-13 champions. Red vs Blue. Manchester vs Manchester. Manchester vs Manchester? Manchester City vs Manchester United.Tomorrow is the Manchester Derby, soccer fans.

I almost forgot, De Bruyne vs Martial! Chelsea will be watching this game downstairs, all the way down from 15th place. Hopefully the basement is not too cold.

These two teams have faced each other 169 times.

City: 49 wins.
Tie: 50
United: 70 wins

Rooney is the all-time top scorers of the derby with 11 goals. Today is his birthday, he's turning 30. He scored 187 Barclays Premier League goals, which is the most goals scored by any players by the time they reached 30. Even Henry.

He hasn't been playing good so far this season but watch out for him tomorrow. He's eating cake right now to get ready for the derby. He even told manutd.com : "There's a lot of local pride, we want to win and it's important that we go into the game confident. If we play the way we know we can play, then we can certainly take the three points."

Whoo! You heard that, City? Unfortunately, City have five injured players going into this game.

All star players: Aguero, Clichy, Nasri, Silva and Delph. But word in the English streets (manchestereveningnews.co.uk) is that Silva can return in the starting XI tomorrow.

Besides all those stars- injuries, City beat Sevilla 2-1 this past Wednesday.

Let's go to Manchester now, the other Manchester. United will be missing Luke Shaw and Ashley Young. But the question for them coming into this game is: What position is Martial playing?

He played on the right last game in a 1-1 draw against Moscow. The United fans weren't happy with that, they like their teenage sensation at the center forward position to score goals. Let's see where Van Gaal put him on the chalkboard tomorrow.

If you guess the result for tomorrow's derby, Read The Game have a prize for you.

CCNY Men's Soccer Closes Their Regular Season With a 5-1 Win Over Medgar Evers

City College ended their regular season with a 5-1 win over Medgar Evers Saturday morning at Randall's Island.

Aaron Schoenfelder had a brace for City. Abraham Martinez, Stephanos Hondrakis and Augustine Amissah also contributed in City's five goals. Zeakial Daley scored Medgar Evers' lone goal.

This victory pushes CCNY (8-7, 5-3 CUNYAC) to a three game winning streak, ending their regular season in third place with 15 points, just four points shy of first place Staten Island.

When asked about his thoughts on the team's performance during the regular season, Schoenfelder said: "We probably could've done more but I'm satisfied of where we got. Even though we had some bad results in the beginning, things came around so to take it all... I think the place is fair."

Medgar Evers (2-13-1, 1-6-1 CUNYAC) ends their season with four points, sitting in seventh place, the last playoff position.

Medgar played the whole game with nine players. With a two men advantage the Beavers would score their first goal in the 11th minute. Hondrakis finished Lanfia Diaby's cross.

City's second goal came of a penalty kick in the 23rd minute. Schoenfelder was fouled by Patrick Gentles in the penalty area. Schoenfelder took and converted his penalty kick.

City would score again nine minutes into the second half. Stylianos Markou crossed the ball to Diaby, who laid the ball to Amissah. Amissah lasered the ball in the bottom right corner of the net to beat the Cougars keeper Remorn Radway.

It took City a minute to score again. Martinez finished Stylianos' cross from close-range. The freshman was pleased to score the first goal of his college career, "I didn't think I was going to score. It's a good feeling."

And for Stylianos that was his second assist of the game. "It was alright, I could've played better," the midfielder said. "But I was working, got the ball to my teammate, they did the hard part."

Schoenfelder completed his brace in the 88th minute to make it five for CCNY. Schoenfelder connected with Christopher Lovelle's through ball, dribbled, and struck the ball in the far corner of the net.

9-men Medgar had a consolation goal with two seconds remaining in the game. Daley muscled around a City defender and hit a screamer past Kamal Abdelrahman.

Finishing third, City have a home-game advantage in Wednesday's quarterfinal against John Jay at 2 p.m. They will be without their top scorer Kenan Redzematovic who picked up a knee injury against John Jay on Oct. 17.

Freshman Luis Castillo will replace Redzematovic. Castillo started four games for City and scored two goals. "Although I didn't get much playing time at the beginning I feel like I can score goals and make a difference," Castillo said.

And for Medgar Evers they will go against first-place Staten Island in the quarter-finals Wednesday at 4 p.m.

CCNY's Men Soccer Uses Two Penalties to Defeat John Jay 2-1

City College converted two penalty kicks to defeat John Jay 2-1 Saturday evening at Randall's Island.

Anthony Scarallo executed a penalty kick late in the second half to declare the win for City, after CCNY's Kenan Redzematovic and Grayson Carlson exchanged goals in the first half.

"I think we should've had more goals than we did," captain Abdul Abdulai said after the game. "And winning a game on two PKs, I mean it's still a win that's the most important thing that we take from it but I think we could've done better."

After this result CCNY and John Jay swaps position in the table. John Jay (5-10 Overall, 3-4 CUNYAC) falls to sixth place with nine points, while the Beavers (6-7, 3-3) climbs to fifth place with nine points as well. City have a game in hand.

There was something odd as the two teams lined up for kickoff. CCNY's midfielder Clifford Leriche positioned himself in the right back position. That was the second consecutive game that coach Roberto Ignaccolo used Leriche in his defense.

The new right back is rather pleased of this switch. "It's always good to play a different position because you never know what you're capable of, before I was playing central midfield and after that, as coach put me in the right back position then I'm more effective there," Leriche said.

City looked like they were going to score the first goal in the 18th minute as Redzematovic sent a through ball to Stephanos Hondrakis. Hondrakis connected with the pass and had nothing but green in front of him and the goalkeeper to beat, forcing Bryant Silva to bring him down in the box.

Referee Martin Gunes pointed to the spot. Redzematovic stood over the spot kick and directed the ball to the right corner of the net sending keeper Sehad Mujovic the wrong way.

Just eight minutes later, Carlson scored yet another goal for John Jay to tie the game. The CUNYAC top scorer was left open in the far post to tap in Justin Osorio's cross. This was Carlson's 18th goal in 16 games played this season.

The two sides remained leveled all the way into halftime.

CCNY came inches of retaking the lead in the second half. Redzematovic was denied of the line in the 77th by a melee of players in front of the net. City saw their top scorer limp off the field with a knee injury after the melee. It is not yet determined if Redzematovic will be available to play against Baruch on Wednesday.

City came out okay without their starting striker. Gunes would blow the whistle for another City penalty in the 82nd minute. Javed Khan stuck a foot out to stop Abdulai's explosive run in the box.

The John Jay players argued for a dive. "It wasn't a dive," Abdulai clarified. "I beat him to pace and then he just clipped my ankle. It was a very soft touch but when you're like running so fast the little touches just going to seem like the heaviest touch ever."

Defender Scarallo stepped up from 12 yards and hit a perfect penalty kick to give his team the win. Mujovic guessed the right way this time but couldn't get a glove on the ball.

The Beavers take on the second best team in CUNYAC Baruch on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Randall's Island, while John Jay travel to Lehman for their last CUNYAC game before the playoffs.

10 Men Lehman Forces a 1-1 Tie Out of Brooklyn in 2OT

The City University of New York Athletic Conference soccer league is not about talent. Or numbers.

Lehman College's Michel Generoso was sent off in the 55th minute against Brooklyn College, but the home side hung onto a 1-1 draw all the way to double overtime Saturday afternoon.

The two sides split goals in the first half.  Marco Thimm-Kaiser finished Jerry Morales' free kick for the Bulldogs, Maurice Whyte scored straight from a corner kick to level things up for Lehman. Lehman's second-captain Generoso picked up a red card in the second half for a two footed slide tackle on Jordy Ortiz. 10 men Lehman kept Brooklyn from scoring in the remaining of the regular 90 minutes and two added overtime periods for a well deserved draw.

"I was hoping that we can win this and pull it out, you know but, a tie is not bad, you know, a tie is not bad with a down-a-man," Lehman's coach Tomo Gojcevic said.

Lehman (7-6-1 Overall, 3-3-1 CUNYAC) remains in fourth place with 10 points while Brooklyn (7-5-2, 4-1-2) drops to third place with 14 points.

The visitors scored the first goal in the opening 12 minutes. Morales' long free-kick bounced past a couple of Lehman defenders to find Kaiser in the six-yard box. Kaiser rebuked the Lehman defenders for their mistakes as he one-timed the ball in the net.

Lehman responded with an equalizer to think about in 34th minute. When captain Whyte stood over the corner flag, strangely enough, his intention wasn't to pass the ball. The junior hit a inswinger that found the far corner of the net, without anyone touching it.

Whyte explained why he decided to have a go from a corner kick after the game. "His [Brooklyn's keeper IIya Keygen] position was bad so I took a shot and it worked. [A shot] from a corner kick, I've done it before.

This sent the two teams even into the break. 10 minutes after the restart, Lehman found themselves down a man. Generoso over-dribbled the ball, losing possession to Ortiz. Generoso attempted to regain the ball from Ortiz with a rocky two footed tackle. Referee Jorge Ramirez didn't hesitate to pull out his red card.

Brooklyn didn't take advantage of their extra man. Lehman looked as much threatening as they did. But both teams failed to score, sending the game to overtime.

The first overtime could've went either way as Lehman's midfielder Brandon Ruiz's free kick went just over the net, and unmarked Sertac Altun failed to hit the target inside the box for Brooklyn.

The second overtime was a different ball game. Brooklyn outshot Lehman (Brooklyn: 4 shots- Lehman: 0) but they couldn't pull out a winner. Lehman did the unexpected: they stopped Brooklyn from scoring with 10 men for 65 minutes.

"We played 65 minutes with 10 men and we just, you know, had to fight. This conference is not about talent, it's not about what you have, it's about your guts, your heart and whatever you play with: its blood, sweat and tears, whichever you're willing to shed. We're willing to shed... so we came here, we played and we make it work," Whyte said.

Lehman will stay home Wednesday to play John Jay at 4 p.m. in a "need win" game according to Gojcevic, while Brooklyn host Rowman University in a non-conference game Monday at 6 p.m.
